    DESCRIPTION

Grape Variety: Xynisteri and Mavro (Blended).

    Alcohol/ABV: 15%

Origin: From Commandaria area on the southern slopes of Troodos mountains, at an altitude of 500-900 metres above sea level with volcanic soils. Cyprus wine with Appellation Controlee status.

History: Considered as the oldest wine in history worldwide, still in production. Dates back to ancient Greece. Hesiod described it in 800 b.c. as “Cyprs Nama”. In the 12th century, Richard the Lionherat calls it “the wine of kings and the king of all wines”

Vinification: After grapes are harvested they are left in the sun to dry for 8-12 days, and then juice is collected for vinification. It is then fermented to at least 9%. Legislation allows the addition of alcohol only if this is derived from eau de vie de vin distillation or pure alcohol. The wine is then stored in oak barrels where it ages for at least two years, and the barells are never emptied.

Tasting: Dark amber colour with strong aromas of dried apricots, caramel, toffy, jams, honey and an underlying sense of smoke. Rich velvet taste combining the sweetness of caramel and raisins with a sense of oak on the nose.

Gastronomy: A sweet wine that can be enjoyed on its own, as an aperitif or after dinner drink. Accompanies dried fruit, sweets, chocolate cakes, soft cheese and nuts. Served at 8° - 10° C.

Awards: KEO’s Commandaria St. Jon has been decorated with awards and medals for years, from Competitions both internationally and at local level.
